For EDGE, the goal has been to encourage exploration while still acknowledging roots in tradition. We call ourselves fiber artists or fabric artists or quilt artists. But what we really did was to expand the idea of “canvas” to include linen and paper, silk and man-made fibers, even recycled materials. We began painting these surfaces, also stamping and printing. We have used sun and snow to provide a carrier for inks and dyes. Such explorations took us to that “edge” described by Daniel Boorstin, the former Librarian of Congress, as a “fertile verge, a place of encounter between something and something else. Working at, on and along that edge is what we still do. Here is a sampler from the edge.
